Over the summer I decided to take a temporary work assignment in Arizona. I took a girls trip there many years ago and remembered it to be beautiful destination. So I was excited about the prospect of spending time there.
After work I would drive to camelback mountain, head to hiking trails and really explore what was local in the area. Because I was there for weeks at a time I also decided to make the best of my weekends there and explore things within reasonable driving distance.
My first destination of choice was the Grand Canyon. Initially, I thought about driving but I realized I didn’t really know the area well and didn’t want to do that drive alone. So I researched companies and did a tour with Detours Az. I chose their Grand Canyon day tour which is about 12 hours and takes you to Sedona, Oak Creek Canyon, Coconino National Forest, the outskirts of the Route 66 in Flagstaff, Grand Canyon National Park and then upon return you see the Painted Desert, the Colorado River gorge and a final stop in Navajo Nation before heading home.
So at 7am several strangers and I boarded a really nice limo bus and went on an adventure. We had an amazing tour guide who knew EVERYTHING about Arizona. He was able to give us details and history on that ride that I would have never found out if I had done the drive alone. He also made a 12 hour day seem like a really quick excursion.
As an add on to the tour I had a YOLO moment and also decided to take a helicopter ride over the Grand Canyon. That was something I was a little bit scared about but it proved to be a highlight of 2015.
I have to say that day was seriously memorable. Taking in the beauty of the ride, learning history, seeing the change in altitude and vegetation as we traveled and so much more.
Below are a few pictures from my adventure that day and a clip from my helicopter ride. There were so many other things I didn’t take photos of because I was trying to live in the moment. But a few memories are captured below.
If you are ever in the Phoenix area I highly recommend setting aside a day and doing the tour. It also made me become fascinated with Sedona which will be my next Rewind post.
