Yes I love food. I love going to new restaurants, I love trying new things, I love the experience of eating, but my favorite part about food is cooking it. Cooking is like therapy to me. It’s a time to think, chop, simmer, roll, roast, sautee and then have something amazing at the end. I also love the aspect of trying new things. My goal lately is to eat as clean as possible so I subscribe to a service called “Washington’s Green Grocer.” With green grocer an abundance of local and/or organic fruit and veggies, along with some other treats are delivered to your door. This week in my box I had a lot of good goodies but one stand out was this unique vegetable romanesco.

I initially thought it was a broccoli cauliflower hybrid but upon further research I found that romanesco is an edible flower from the family that includes broccoli, cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, and cabbage. It tastes very similar to cauliflower, but with a slightly nuttier, earthier flavor. So I decided to make this weird but intriguing vegetable the same way I make my broccoli and cauliflower, roasted.

So here’s my quick recipe:

I took one bunch of romanesco and cut it off the stalk. I washed and patted dry then placed it on a cookie sheet. I sprinkled pink sea salt, cracked pepper, red pepper flakes, and trader joe’s south african smoke blend (RIP) on the romanesco. Then I drizzled extra virgin olive oil on top and tossed on the sheet. I put the the romanesco in the oven for 15 minutes at 410degrees I took it out and tossed and stuck it back in for about 5 more minutes. I took it out again and sprinkled with trader joes’s three cheese blend and returned to the oven for about five more minutes.

Here’s the result.

It cooked down A LOT. But this was VERY good and I will buy again. I think my next recipe I will use it in a tarte or quiche.

So if you see it, try it. It looks weird but tastes great.
